Independent presidential candidate Monica Macovei told a meeting on Saturday with her supporters at the Lujerului metro station in Bucharest that she fought and continues to fight for 'Romania, the country where they do not steal.'

'I want to thank all of you for having got out of your homes in such a beastly weather to meet me. In the end, weather will not defeat us, and neither will the corrupted and the corrupted political class. We can win. We are 3rd in the polls and rising (...) My Romania, our Romania, is a country where they do not steal and where politicians are there to serve the citizens. I do not want to become a chieftain, but I want you to hire me to wok for you. Together we are a force. Come, join me and together we will win the right to live in a clean, prosperous and honest country! I do not give up and I do not give up on you,' said Macovei.

Accompanied by nearly one hundred supporters shouting 'Macovei, save us from them!' she travelled to the Vetranilor Square, where he talked to anyone who wanted to address her and bought flowers from an old lady.

A militant against shale gas fracking invited Macovei to a debate on the topic.

'We can surely talk. The energy independence I want for Romania is not some hypothetical one, it is a real one. Without energy independence there is no political independence. As far as I am concerned, energy independence is based on three sources: nuclear power plants in areas without seismic risks, the Black Sea oil and natural gas reserves and renewable power. If we have these three resources, we will not need either fracking or cyanides for gold mining at Rosia Montana,' said Macovei. AGERPRES
