Watch Live: 33rd Athens Marathon Race kicks off with pandemonium! (results + pics)
A record-breaking number of 43,000 runners from 100 countries headed to the city center from early on Sunday to take part in the 33rd Athens Marathon and shorter races – 35% greater than last year’s participation. Meteorological reports showed 15-degree temperatures for the morning and 20 degrees at noon.
The police organized road closures for the duration of the main event from 9 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. in central Athens with traffic being stopped from 7.45 a.m. to 9.15 a.m. for the 5km race and 8.45 to 10.40 a.m. for the 10km race.

The “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” is organised by SEGAS and co-organised by the Region of Attica, the Municipality of Athens and the Municipality of Marathon, while OPAP S.A. is the Grand Sponsor for the event that also includes sponsorship by the Greek National Tourism Organisation.
