Mayor of town near Albanian border calls for gun trade crackdown

Andreas Papaspyrou, the mayor of Konitsa, near Greece's border with Albania, has called for better policing and heightened security in the border region following the discovery on Thursday of a cache of assault rifle ammunition, the latest in a string of such finds.

During a patrol along the Albanian border on Thursday, Greek police discovered two large sacks containing more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition for Kalashnikov rifles.

The sacks had been dumped next to an old water mill on the Sarantaporos River, according to police sources. In comments to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Papaspyrou said the illegal trade in guns and other illicit activities were rife in the broader region.
