ATHEX: High-volatility session sends banks into red

A very volatile session at the Greek bourse on Wednesday ended with mixed results, with banks sliding 2.71 percent while the majority of stocks posted gains as mid- and small-caps remained on the rising course set on Tuesday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 720.13 points, shedding 0.21 percent from Tuesday's 721.67 points. Banks losses weighed heavily on the large-cap FTSE-26 index, which contracted 0.58 percent to close at 1,881.13 points, while mid-caps advanced 0.95 percent and small-caps grew 1.66 percent.

Alpha Bank surrendered 3.33 percent, Piraeus Bank gave up 2.87 percent and National lost 2.85 percent, but Lamda Development outperformed, adding 5.11 percent, and Mytilineos improved 2.22 percent. Both on a winning streak this week, PPC increased 0.95 percent and ADMIE Holdings added 1.09 percent.
