Moldova's Security Service Chief Resigns

After two months at the head of the Moldovan Intelligence and Security Service, SIS, Vitalie Pirlog handed in his resignation stating that he wanted to return to Interpol, which he had left in December last year.

He explained that it is his "desire to continue important reforms at the initiation of which I participated in the Interpol File Control Commission."

Pirlog's resignation comes after German publication Der Spiegel published an article online about an alleged party thrown by a Moldovan delegation after an Interpol conference in Beijing in September 2017.

The publication claims the party was to celebrate the ex-chief of customs, Fredolin Lecari, being appointed to the ranks of high command at Interpol, and that the Moldovan delegation sent around two tonnes of Moldovan wine and cognac to Beijing via the diplomatic mail service for the soiree.

The article also claimed that both Pirlog and Lecari are close to the leader of Moldova's ruling Democratic Party, Vladimir Plahotniuc.
