Romania, Cape Verde discuss measures to restart political, diplomatic co-operation

Romania's Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu and his counterpart from Cape Verde Luis Filipe Tava, on a visit to Bucharest, have agreed on a series of measures aimed at restarting the political and diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.

These include finalising the accreditation of a non-resident ambassador of Cape Verde in Bucharest and concluding a memorandum of understanding between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

According to a press statement released by Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) on Friday, Melescanu expressed Romania's desire to relaunch relations with Sub-Saharan African countries, with Cape Verde being an important partner of Romania in West Africa.

"Also emphasised was the need to strengthen economic and sectoral co-operation in areas of mutual interest, according to the potential and profile of the two countries. In that respect, both direct relationship between the business communities of the two states, and the use of co-operation instruments for Sub-Saharan Africa existing at the European Union level," according to MAE.

At the same time, agreement was reached on the need to update the legal framework governing the bilateral relationships by adopting supple and flexible instruments that can generate concrete results to the benefit of both countries.

According to the MAE, the importance of continuing the traditional bilateral co-operation in the field of education was emphasised, with the forms of co-operation in this area, including scholarships, to be steered according to the priorities of the two parties.

Talks also included an analysis of some topical regional and international themes, with a focus on the importance of combating illegal migration, fighting against terrorism and supporting the process of democracy consolidation on the African continent.
