Amendments to Justice laws, discussed by Toader with Vera Jourova - European Commissioner for Justice

Justice Minister Tudorel Toader met on Friday with Vera Jourova, European Commissioner for Justice, Consumer Protection and Gender Equality, among the topics discussed by the two officials being the developments in the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) and the stage of the amendments brought to the Justice laws, the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to a Justice Ministry release, in the context of the participation of the Justice Ministry delegation in the informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Innsbruck, Tudorel Toader had a working meeting with Vera Jourova.

The topics discussed during the meeting focused on issues related to developments in the Romanian justice field, with reference to the latest evaluation mission under the CVM, which took place June 25 to 27.

In this context, Toader welcomed the good cooperation between the Romanian authorities and the European Commission within the CVM and reiterated Romania's aspirations regarding the completion of the Mechanism by meeting the recommendations in the European Commission report of January 2017.

"The two officials also discussed the stage of the amendments to the Justice laws, the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code. The minister of justice pointed out that the laws of justice were subject to constitutional control several times, were put in line by Parliament with the decisions of the Constitutional Court and also the requests for reconsideration formulated by the President of Romania were solved.

As far as the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code are concerned, they are now subject to constitutional control, pending the Constitutional Court's decisions. At the same time, the minister of justice said that the Venice Commission is to give its opinion on the draft laws discussed. The meeting represented a good opportunity to make an introduction on the training measures in the field of justice in view of taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019. Detailed discussions will be held on this topic during a future bilateral meeting," the Justice Ministry informs.
