AHEPA marks 44th anniversary of invasion, occupation of Cyprus

The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the largest Greek-American organization in the United States, has issued a statement on the 44th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and the Mediterranean island's subsequent illegal occupation.

"This was, and remains to this very day, an intolerable act; one that is a gross violation of the rule of law, human rights, and democratic ideals," AHEPA Supreme President Carl R. Hollister said.

He said that the invasion and occupation caused "the displacement of at least 180,000 Greek Cypriot refugees who to this day are unable to return to their homes which is also a violation of human rights."

In the same statement, the AHEPA chief expressed his hope that the two sides will restart talks to reunify the island under the terms of a United Nations-sponsored initiative.
