Romania wins nine medals on first day of European Youth Weightlifting Championships

Romanian weightlifters won nine medals on Sunday on the first day of the European European Youth Weightlifting Championships, the Under-15 and Under-17 categories in Milan, Italy, seven golds and two bronzes.

Three gold medals each went to weightlifters Dorina Tofan and Alice Halmac in the U-15 girls' events.

In the girls' 44kg category Dorina Tofan of ACS AMEFA Arad, won gold for a 59-kg snatch, 73-kg clean and jerk, which gave a total of 132 kg. Conducting the award ceremony was Nicu Vlad, chairman of the Romanian Weightlifting Federation and vice president of the International Weightlifting Federation.

Alice Halmac (48 kg) of CSM Bacau, won gold for a 62-kg snatch, 73 kg clean and jerk and a total of 135 kg.

In the Under-17, boys' 50kg category, Cosmin Krupla (CSM Arad) took bronze for and 82-kg snatch, gold for a 103 kg clean and jerk and another bronze medal for a total of 185 kg.

Krupla won significant points for earning a place in the Youth Olympic Games 2018 in Buenos Aires.

Compatriot Leonard Sandu also competed in the same category, finishing 7th in the snatch event (66 kg), 7th in the clean and jerk (95 kg), and 6th in the total, for 161 kg.
