Ana Birchall: Kofi Annan - active militant for peace

Bucharest, Aug 18 /Agerpres/ - Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General in 1997-2006, was an active militant for peace, and his death is one of the saddest pieces of news lately, Deputy Prime Minister for implementing strategic partnerships of Romania, Ana Birchall wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

"Kofi Annan was an active militant for peace, his merits being recognized even by presenting him with the Nobel Prize in 2001. Kofi Annan had a particularly important role in enhancing the role the United Nations played in making peace in conflict zones. His words, which remained in my heart, are as a legacy left to future generations: ‘Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.' God rests him in peace! Condolences to the bereaved family," Birchall wrote.

Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2001, has died at the age of 80, his foundation announced in Geneva, according to international news agencies.
