Explosion Shakes Bosnian Refinery

The explosion occurred around 9:30 pm local time at the Russian-owned refinery in the northern Bosnian town of Brod, the local authorities announced on Tuesday night.

According to Brod's mayor Ilija Jovicic, several workers were injured in the event but are not in danger. The explosion was followed by a huge fire that firefighters are trying to contain.

"The situation is under control," he also added.

The oil refinery in Bosanski Brod, as well as the refinery in Modrica and Nestro Petrol in Banja Luka, are part of Optima Group, majority owned by NefteGazInkor, a subsidiary of the Russian company Zarubezhneft.
