Heavy snowfall cripples life in country
A messy mix of snow and rain wreaked havoc in parts of the country, as roads were closed to traffic in the province in the eastern and southeastern Anatolian region due to heavy snowfall and blizzards causing low visibility.
Transportation was severely disrupted in the provinces of Tunceli, Hakkari, Kars and Sivas, with some vehicles stranded on the roads.

Voter turnout declines in runoff

‘Alparslan‘ most popular name for boys, ‘Zeynep‘ for girls
The most popular name given to boys born in 2022 was "Alparslan," while "Zeynep" became the most preferred name for newborn girls, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced.
According to TÜİK'S 2022 children statistics, "Yusuf" and "Miraç" followed the most used name, "Alparslan."
More than 8,300 of newborn male babies were named "Alparslan" in 2022.
Six more cities declared as disaster zone
Six more provinces, including Bingöl, Kayseri, Mardin, Tunceli, Niğde and Batman, have been declared as disaster zone as they were damaged in the Feb. 6 earthquakes, the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has announced.

District quarantined for six months as rabies detected
As rabies was detected in a dead cow in the eastern province of Tunceli's Hozat district, the entrance and exit of animals to the districts have been prohibited for six months.

In Turkish mountains so high the silver clouds almost touch the top of his head, the homesick Afghan shepherd prepares his baaing flock for a good shear.
The locals in the eastern province of Tunceli's Mercan Valley have been gradually replaced by Afghans, who fled here by foot and truck across Iran from the poverty and bloodshed back home.

Fazıl Say raises awareness about pollution in concert
Turkey's internationally acclaimed pianist Fazıl Say gave a free concert on the banks of Munzur River in the eastern province of Tunceli, formerly known as Dersim, to raise awareness about Munzur River and environmental pollution.
Thousands of people from various parts of Turkey viewed the concert, accompanied by mezzo-soprano Serenad Bağcan.

International Workers' Day, also known as May Day, has been marked by tens of thousands in rallies organized by labor unions, non-governmental organizations and political parties across Turkey.
The biggest crown gathered in Istanbul's Maltepe district to celebrate the day.
