Traffic regulations for 41st Peace Marathon in Athens

Athens will enforce traffic regulations this Sunday for the 41st Peace Marathon.

Between 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., there will be phased disruptions to vehicle traffic, along with no-parking and no-stopping zones on designated avenues and streets in Marathon - Nea Makri, Rafina - Pikermi, Pallini - Gerakas - Anthousa, Agia Paraskevi, Chalandri, and Psychiko - Filothei municipalities.

Officials respond to coronavirus outbreak in nursing home

A disinfecting crew in hazmat suits enters a retirement home at the seaside settlement of Nea Makri, east of Athens, Monday. The center was put under quarantine over the weekend after 12 people - 10 residents and two members of staff - tested positive for the coronavirus. The elderly were taken to Sotiria Hospital in Athens for treatment as they are considered high-risk.

Covid-19 tests to be carried out at all Attica retirement homes after outbreak

Greek Health Ministry representative Sotiris Tsiodras and National Health Organization (EODY) president Panagiotis Arkoumaneas on Monday visited a retirement home in Nea Makri, east of Athens, which was quarantined the night before after several residents tested positive for the coronavirus. 

Gale-force winds keep ferries docked

Weather problems persist in central and southern Greece on Friday, as the strong winds are keeping ferries docked and snowfall has blocked a number of roads in various regions.

No ferries sail out of the Attica ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio due to gale-force winds, except for the large ferries to Aigina and Poros islands in the Saronikos Gulf.

Plan for new marina in Attica's Nea Makri through PPP

The town of Nea Makri, which belongs in the same municipality as Marathon, is set to get the first marina in the region of northeast Attica.

A study commissioned by the Infrastructure Ministry commissioned for the broader area has found that while southern Attica has several marinas, northeastern Attica has none that are properly licensed.

Man caught pinching donations for fire victims

A man has been arrested after being caught stealing donations for fire victims from a drop-off site in Nea Makri, near the areas ravaged by last month's lethal wildfires, police said on Thursday.

Members of the police's motorcycle-riding DIAS squad detained the suspect, a 37-year-old Albanian national, inside the town gym on Tuesday after receiving a call by a guard.

Firefighters tackle blaze as high risk warning issued

Firefighters were called to tackle a house fire in the Aghia Marina area of Nea Makri in eastern Attica on Wednesday morning, with the authorities warning of a high risk of fire in Attica, southern Evia and some northern Aegean islands.

Nine firefighters, three tenders and a helicopter are involved in the operation to extinguish the blaze, which has spread to low vegetation.
