Small hydropower plants to bring investment, create new jobs

BELGRADE – Serbia’s Energy Minister Zorana Mihajlovic and representatives of 20 local governments in the country signed a memorandum on cooperation in the construction of small hydroelectric power plants (SHPP) with a total capacity of 60 MW.

After the signing of the document in the Serbian government, Mihajlovic said that the project to build new SHPPs means about EUR 200 to 250 million of investment and creation of new jobs.

Most importantly, she stressed, it is something that should step up the development of local governments in municipalities where the SHPPs will be built.

The energy minister said that the second call for tenders for the construction of the SHPPs at a total of 143 sites was successfully completed and there were close to 400 bidders.

The local government leaders said that they will be ready to welcome investors, as their arrival will mean new jobs and greater revenues, with full use of the hydro-potential in the municipalities.

They also expressed gratitude to the Serbian government for cooperation.
