Dacic for early elections in Vojvodina

BELGRADE - Leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia Ivica Dacic pointed that early elections should also be held in Vojvodina, as the composition of the parliament in this northern Serbian province does not reflect the political will of its people.

Dacic noted that the early parliamentary elections at a central level are scheduled for March 16 in order to establish a new legitimacy in the eyes of the people, and stressed that clear procedures and deadlines should be defined for the holding of local, provincial and presidential elections.

Clear procedures and deadlines are necessary “in order to avoid the possibility of multiple early elections creating confusion in the society," Dacic said in an interview to the Belgrade-based weekly Novi Magazin.

In line with the international practice, local elections should be held midway through the mandate of the new parliament, which will be formed after the snap elections, in order to test the legitimacy of local governments, he proposed.

Dacic added that the legitimacy of government of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina and of the Serbian president should be tested out as well.

The outgoing prime minister explained that holding elections at various levels on the same day is not a good solution, because of the tension in the society and the functioning of state institutions.

It is important for us to have a regular election procedure and deadlines, as Serbia needs stability of its institutions, said Dacic.
