Northern Mitrovica citizens to elect mayor on Sunday

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA - Citizens of northern Kosovska Mitrovica, north Kosovo-Metohija, will vote in the elections for the local mayor on Sunday for the fourth time in under four months and the election silence began on Friday at midnight.

One of the four candidates for the mayor is Oliver Ivanovic of the Citizens' Initiative 'Freedom, Democracy, Justice' who has been placed in detention as a suspect for participation in alleged war crimes in 199 and post-war incidents in 2000, including an aggravated murder.

Candidate of the Citizens' Initiative Srpska is Goran Rakic, while the Democratic Party of Kosovo nominated Fljorent Aazemi and the Democratic League of Kosovo listed Musa Miftari as their candidate.

Everyone is optimistic concerning the election outcome and two Serb candidates for the northern Kosovska Mitrovica mayor think that they can score a victory in the first round of the polls.

Rakic expressed the expectation that Mitrovica would get a Serb mayor on Sunday and added that he believes he will win in the first round of the polls, after which the community of Serb municipalities would be set up immediately.

Ivanovic also addressed the citizens by an open letter sent from the Pristina detention unit and called on them to vote in the polls and elect their mayor in the first round of the elections.

A total of 28,429 citizens will be able to use their voting right and cast their ballots for the mayor of northern Kosovska Mitrovica on Sunday.
