Police check possible associates of Saric gang

BELGRADE - In cooperation with the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime, the criminal police department (UKP) is running checks regarding those who collaborated with the gang led by drug lord Darko Saric, Director of the Serbian Police Milorad Veljovic said on Friday.

“The UKP and all departments at the police directorate have my full support, in my capacity as police director, to expel from their ranks all those who should not be among them," Veljovic told Tanjug referring to the questioning of former and current police employees.

Police must set an example and banish crime from their ranks, Veljovic said, underscoring that the fight against corruption will continue.

"This has nothing to do with politics, this is a professional matter," Veljovic said.

After the questioning of Branko Lazarevic, the charge d' affaires at the Serbian Embassy in Athens and former chief of staff for Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, police interviewed Boris Gara, deputy head responsible for investigative methods at the UKP, on Friday, the Belgrade-based broadcaster Pink reported.

The two are suspected of disclosing an official secret.
