Serbia to contribute to respect for human rights

VIENNA - Gordana Comic, member of the Serbian parliament’s permanent delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE PA), said Thursday that the Serbian delegation will contribute to respect for human rights ahead of Serbia’s OSCE presidency in 2015.

Comic, OSCE PA General Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions rapporteur, said that the body has been focusing on migrants as fragile situations are forcing people on the rim of the OSCE region to leave their countries.

Comic told reporters that a resolution on migrants is being prepared for the July General Assembly in Baku.

"We believe that the OSCE countries need to consider a position to be taken concerning these people. We oppose seeing them as a threat ... Regardless of the cause that forced them to emigrate, they have a right to a dignified life where they are looking to find it," said Comic.

Special emphasis has also been laid on the position of women in migrant populations.

"In Baku, we want to mark 10 years of the Action Plan by which the OSCE pledged to care about the economic position of women, human rights and struggle for life without violence,” she said.

Just before taking over the presidency of the OSCE from the Swiss delegation, Serbia will contribute to the preservation of human rights of women and migrants as particularly vulnerable groups in OSCE member countries, Comic said.
A two-day OSCE PA Winter Meeting began in Vienna today.
