Bulgaria's Energy Watchdog to Compensate Green Energy Producers

State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation has approved a mechanism to compensate green energy producers.

The decision comes after a temporary pricing regime for their access to the country's energy grid was removed.

Bulgaria's energy watchdog earlier determined a constant price of BGN 2.45 per mWh. No fee is to be imposed on access to energy grids, which means wind and solar farm owners will owe a charge only to the State System Operator for electric energy, but not to the power distributors.

Considering the new pricing regime, the state watchdog will later determine the sums to be paid back to producers, who until the new rules were charged with additional 20%.

Over the past months, representatives of the renewable energy sector have staged a few protests due to a 20% fee imposed on their production.

The introduction of the charge, which is still considered controversial among some experts and politicians, was put forward in Parliament by ultra-nationalist Ataka.
