Increasing number of doctors "leaving Serbia"

BELGRADE -- The Serbian Medical Chamber last year issued 850 certificates of good practice which allow doctors to work abroad, a conference in Belgrade has heard.

Opening the two-day European Forum of Medical Associations 2014 in Belgrade on Thursday, Chamber Director Tatjana Radosavljević affirmed the trend of doctors leaving Serbia and said it would be one of the topics discussed at the event, Beta reported.

"Every doctor planning to leave Serbia gets that certificate - I signed 35 of them three days ago," said Radosavljević.

According to her, data on the number of doctors who left for Germany in the past year will be received from the German Medical Association in early April.

Secretary general of the European Forum of Medical Associations Leah Wapner added that states must earmark more money for health care so doctors' pay is sufficient and so they can use new technology and conduct research.

Doctors from 28 European countries and Israel, and from 34 organizations, are participating in the conference in Belgrade. The main topics this year are healthy lifestyles, waiting lists, health care systems in countries in transition and vaccinating health-care workers.
