Construction of Geox plant begins in southern Serbia

VRANJE - The construction of a Geox factory in Bunusevac, near Vranje, southern Serbia, has formally begun by laying the cornerstone, and the plant will provide jobs for 1,250 people in the first stage of its operation.

The investment is the largest in Serbia this year and will help develop the Vranje region, according to what was said at the ceremony on Wednedsay which marked the start of the project.

Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said creation of new jobs was the most important thing for Serbia's future.

"Geox is a laerge company, one of the largest in Europe, and it is really a great success for Serbia, and especially the southern part of the country, to have such a company open a factory here," Dacic pointed out.

It can be a positive signal to other Italian companies and investors to come to the region, he stressed.

Officials of the Serbian government, Italian embassy, Geox, Vranje and numerous other guests attended the event.

The government supported the investment with EUR 11.25 million and another RSD 100 million, while the town of Vranje provided EUR 5 million.

Head of Geox in Vranje Gaetano Ambrosi said production in facility employing 200 people started in August last year and that Geox was pleased with the results.

A project like this would not be possible without financial support from the Serbian government and the town of Vranje, he noted.

Geox is certain the investment will help attract new investors to the region, make the town proud and support the development of the entire area, he stated.
