MMA highly respected by citizens

BELGRADE - The pillars of Serbian statehood, which include the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, are the institutions the Serbian citizens traditionally trust the most, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic has said in Belgrade.

The military health care system, with the Military Medical Academy (MMA) as its driving force, has had a major role in establishing that trust, Nikolic said late Monday at a ceremonial academy marking the 170th anniversary of the MMA.

"It is an institution of national significance and it has been one of the most respected military hospitals in southeastern Europe for decades," Nikolic pointed out.

The MMA has acquired its reputation also through rich international cooperation and participation of its medical teams in UN and EU multinational operations, Nikolic said.

Cherishing the tradition is not sufficient, Nikolic said, adding that military medical professionals are setting the highest standards in treatment, preventive medicine, education, science and research.

The head of the MMA Brig. Gen. Marijan Novakovic announced that the anniversary will be marked in each month of this year.

The MMA celebrates its day on March 2 to commemorate the day when, by a decree of Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, the first central military hospital was established in 1844.

The MMA is a leading institution in medical treatment, preventive medicine, pharmacy, education and science and research in Serbia and southeastern Europe.
