Novi Sad to bid for European Capital of Culture 2020

NOVI SAD - The initiative to nominate the second-largest city in Serbia Novi Sad as the European Capital of Culture in 2020 has been presented on Monday at the 20th international Book Fair in Novi Sad.

Director of Novi Sad Cultural Center Andrej Fajgelj said that the official application will be submitted in the fall, adding that the decision on whether Novi Sad has won the prestigious title of European Capital of Culture for the year 2020 will be made known next year.

Along with cities in Croatia and Ireland, the third city to be named the Capital of Culture will be selected from the ranks of EU candidate countries, said Fajgelj, and pointed out that based on everything that has been done so far, Novi Sad is among the most serious contenders.

The candidacy of Novi Sad was presented at the stand of the Novi Sad Cultural Center by a member of the project coordination team Darko Polic, who stressed that culture has positioned itself as a priority of knowledge- and creativity-based economy in the EU development projects, which largely contributes to the economic development of candidate cities.
