Bulgarian Museum Publishes Ancient Roman Recipes

The Ruse history museum published a series of postcards with ancient Roman fortresses along the nowadays Bulgarian stretch of the Danube, with Roman recipes on the reverse side. 

In certain periods, the Danube was the border (limes) of the Roman empire and the area was protected by fortresses. Among them are Yatrus, Sexaginta Prista, Tegra and Transmarisca, which are drawn on the postcards by the Ruse painter Ognyan Balkandzhiev, in the style of Medieval copies of Roman road maps. 

The recipes, which include ingredients used today, have been discovered and adapted by a team of etnographers. The recipes include pork ribs with plums, pork with leeks and quinces, various seafood dishes and some local dishes from the Ruse region. 

The postcards will be used for advertising and educational purposes.
