US, Russia Dominate Global Arms Exports

The United States and Russia combined supply over half of the world’s arms exports, according to data for the past 5 years.

The United States accounts for 29% of all exported weapons and military equipment, while Russia ranks second with 27%, according to a study of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, cited by RIA Novosti. The data concerns the time from 2008-2013.

With a large gap, Germany is the 3rd biggest arms exporter, at 7% of the global share. Fourth is China with 6%, overtaking France.

The tendency has been for Russian arms exports to increase over the past years. As an example, the report points out Russia’s increased role in supplying India with weapons and military technology.

The majority of U.S. exports are aircraft, while Russian sales are focused on warships.
