The State Commission for Energy and Water Regulation (DKEVR) fined the power distributors EVN and Energo-Pro BGN 1 M each, said the commission's head Boyan Boev.

The penalties are the highest possible. By the end of the week the third power distributor in Bulgaria, CEZ, will also be fined with the same sum.

Currently the fines can be contested by the power distribution companies, but, according to Boev, DKEVR's next step will be to strip them off their licenses, unless they pay their debts to the cash-strapped National Electric Company (NEK).

Boev reminded that the deadline for the payment of BGN 318 M to NEK expires today.

Last Friday, NEK filed a claim with DKEVR, stating that the three power distributors owed it a total of BGN 318 M.

DKEVR and the Ministry of Economy and Energy set a deadline of three workdays for the companies to pay the debts.

Meanwhile, over the weekend the three power distributors claimed they pay all their dues in a timely manner and don't owe NEK anything.
