Moderate quake rattles island of Cephalonia


A moderate quake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale rattled Cephalonia on Tuesday morning as the Ionian Sea island continues efforts to recover from a large tremor in January that caused significant damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure.

The Athens-based Geodynamic Institute said that the epicenter of Tuesday's 8.29 a.m. tremor was 10 kilometers northwest of the main town of Argostoli.

The island, one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations, was hit by a 5.7-Richter quake in January which was followed by hundreds of strong aftershocks.

Tuesday's quake is believed to be part of that succession.
