PM:Foundations of independent journalism vital for democracy

BELGRADE - Truth, freedom and justice, as the foundations of independent journalism and professional ethic, are a major factor in Serbia's democratic development, outgoing Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said in a message to media representatives on occasion of the Serbian Journalists' Day.

"Those values are part of the tradition of Serbian journalism and obligate journalists to do their work in an honourable, professional and responsible way, in the interest of the citizens and the prosperity of Serbia," Dacic said in the message.

"I extend my congratulations on occasion of the Serbian Journalists' Day to all journalists and media professionals," the government press office quoted Dacic as saying.

The Serbian Journalists' Day was established in 2001 to mark March 14 (27), 1791 and the publication of the first Serbian-language newspaper, Serpskija povsednevnija novini ("Serbian daily newspaper").

The paper was published in Vienna two times a week by the Greek brothers Markides Pulio over nearly two years.
