Tanja Miscevic: Investigation of political background of Djindjic’s assassination a condition set by the EU

On the day when access negotiations between Serbia and the EU were officially opened, chiefs of political groups in the European Parliament requested that investigation over political background of Zoran Djindjic’s assassination was one of the conditions of negotiations over judicial system. In her interview with the Blic, Miscevic says that this issue is a part of chapter 23 and that the European Commission shall not specify it as a separate condition.


- The investigation over political background of the Premier’s assassination is an official part of the negotiations. If problems are not being solved there can be no rule of law and stability of institutions because you actually have a problem with judicial reform. Assassination of a Prime Minister is in every country a serious challenge for the system. Even if nobody from abroad has mentioned it or requested it as a condition we should do it for ourselves – Miscevic says.

 

Does it mean that investigation over political background of the assassination is officially a part of chapter 23?


- That is the case with every murder case that has not been solved. One of the issues being insisted on is a large number of unsolved cases but also a large number of unsolved political murders. It is an obligation by Serbia to work on it.

When will negotiations over judicial system be opened?


- Our plan is that it happens as soon as possible, until the end of the year, in December when we would open chapter 23 and chapter 24 that refers to police and judicial cooperation in criminal...
