Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation starts work

BELGRADE -- The Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation, named after the journalist and publisher who was shot and killed in April 1999 in Belgrade, will be launched on Friday.

The start of the foundation's work will be celebrated at the Mixer House in Belgrade, when the winners of its first competition in support of the local media - "What is Serbia keeping quiet about?" - will be announced.

The aim of the foundation is to, through competitions, programs and projects, encourage and support journalists and media dealing with quality journalism, and strengthen their role as "controllers" of the authorities.

In addition to the announcement of the winners of the first contest , the organization's future plans and projects will also be presented.

The foundation will engage in support and development of free, independent and responsible media, it has been said.

The gathering today will be addressed by Jelena Ćuruvija, honorary president of the Foundation, Stephen Heintz, president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Ivan Vejvoda, senior vice president for program of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Vukosava Crnjanski, president of the board of the Foundation Slavko Ćuruvija, Snežzana Milošević, secretary general of the Local Press independent local media association and member of the Foundation's Commission.

In addition, the same venue will host an exhibition of the front pages of Ćuruvija's banned newspaper Dnevni Telegraf.
