Attack on Police in North Kosovo Probed

Kosovo Police said the investigation into Monday night's attack on three Serbian police officers, one male and two females, is ongoing, but they had no information on the motive.

“The officers survived the attack and are out of danger. The investigation will reveal the motives,” Baki Kelani, police spokesperson, told Balkan Insight.

The three were attacked on Monday night in the northern municipality of Zubin Potok, while making their regular rounds. Unknown persons reportedly used firearms.

Kosovo leaders urged the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible.

President Atifete Jahjaga called the attack “an attempt to hinder the implementation of the rule of law and to keep the people in the country in a state of tension”.

Hashim Thaci, the Prime minister, said it was “a cowardly act against the security of the people of Kosovo and their institutions and is thus to be condemned”.

Earlier this month, a local crowd of more than 100 Serbs forced the release from a police station of Slobodan Sovrlic, who was wanted for serious criminal offences.

The EU rule-of-law mission, EULEX, condemned the “unlawful act” at the police station in Zubin Potok, demanding “a thorough investigation of the events that prevented justice from taking its course”.
