Serbian driver new hero in USA

A man from Nis saved his colleague from a cistern truck on fire in Los Angeles. I am always ready to help even at a cost of my life, Ivan Vasovic of Nis says. He got in the US the Goodyear Award for the Highway Hero.

Vasovic got this prestigious award for saving a driver from a cistern truck on fire on October 27 last year. He almost lost his own life while saving a colleague.

 

He left Serbia disappointed about the situation in the country after assassination of the Premier Zoran Djindjic. He has been living in America for eleven years already. He started working as a driver and today has his own company the Boulevard Way Inc. The award made him extremely popular and he got a nickname the Superman. The company he is working at has established an annual award named after him.


- I was in a truck in the center of Los Angeles when a cistern slid off a road and went on fire. A cab and the front part were hanging over an overpass road. I watched the drama from below. A fire started swollowing a cabin in which there was a driver. I though the fire would kill him, but he jumed out of a cabine from a height of about ten meters. He fell down and broke his both legs. He was on fire. Six people were standing aside and making photos by their mobile phones. I did not think for a moment but immediately rushed to him and started extinguishing the fire – Ivan says.

 

It was not possible to be by the injured driver for more than a second or two because of huge heat coming from a cistern above them. The cistern could have fell down any moment and kill them both.

- A passerby helped me, but we could not drag the injured...
