Dragisa, a "forest man" from Loznica

Every morning at dawn, Dragisa Savic (37) of Zajaca prays to God for health and happiness before heading to the forests of Zajaca and Paskovac. He prays for himself and his horses Misko, Cvetko, Becar and Biser.

Those horses are like faithful friends to him, his colleagues at work. Dragisa says that only work of miners is more difficult than his. He uses horses to drag timber from woods in which a tractor or other adequate mechanisation cannot enter.


- The land is steep and woods are thick. Paths are nerrow and muddy. This is the environment in which i am earning my bread. I have been doing this job for a decade and a half. I like my job and my horses. I cannot imagine a day without them. Often it seems to me that one can find a friend among animals easier than among humans – Dragisa says.


Every horse is loaded with a quarter of cubic meter of timper. Every day he works from seven in the morning until five in the afternoon and drags 15 cubic meters daily. He does not earn much and when all costs for equipment are paid, he lives on 30,000 Dinars monthly.
