Bulgaria's Tomato Growers Plan Protests

The tomato producers in Bulgaria plan large scale protests as they fear they will be unable to sell their produce. 

According to the national channel bTV, the producers in Petrich, one of the major tomato growing regions, are planning to throw their tomatoes on the road, because of the cheap imports from abroad. 

Georgi Kaftanov, chairperson of the Southwest 2013 cooperation, the dishonest competition was coming mostly from Greek imports of undocumented defective produce at very low prices. 

He claimed importers were getting the discarded vegetables for free, were importing them for “private consumption”, but were selling them instead.

The producers will also demand higher EU subsidies for agriculture, in order to improve their competitiveness.
