EU Foreign Ministers to Discuss Broader Sanctions on Russia

The EU's foreign ministers are meeting on Monday in Brussels to discuss the situation in Ukraine and to possibly agree on extending sanctions against Russia.

The EU has declared illegal Sunday's referendums in Donetsk and Luhansk for breaking away from Ukraine.

Broadening sanctions against Russia will be on the agenda, with companies to be targeted for the first time, Euractiv reports. So far, only individuals have been sanctioned with asset freezes and travel bans. However, major companies and energy giant Gazprom will most likely not fall in this new list.

The decision to impose new broader sanctions against Moscow will be met with opposition from some of the EU states, namely those who are more dependent on energy and trade with Russia. Bulgaria is one of those countries, which has not expressed firm support for sanctions.
