If the European Parliament elections in Bulgaria were held today, the two main rivals would engage in a hotly-contested electoral battle, according to the Afis polling agency.

According to a survey of Afis, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) would receive 17.9% of the vote, center-right party GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria) 17.6%, liberal party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) 8.3%, and the Bulgaria without Censorship party of former TV host Nikolay Barekov 6.7%.

The data predicts a neck and neck battle for the main rivals, ruling party BSP and opposition party GERB.

However, the decreasing interest in the upcoming Election Day and the anticipated low voter turnout gives BSP an edge over its main opponent, center-right party GERB of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.

Taking into account a percentage of hesitating voters for each of the parties, the forecast looks as follows: GERB 23.5%, BSP 24.6%, Bulgaria without Censorship 13.4%, DPS 12.8%.

Against the backdrop of a projected voter turnout of 30-35%, or 2.1 – 2.4 million voters, it is very likely that Bulgaria's 17 MEP seats are distributed between the first four parties, as follows – 6 seats for GERB and BSP, 3 seats for DPS and 2 seats for Bulgaria without Censorship, according to the Afis polling agency, as cited by Sega daily.
