Around 25,070 evacuated from areas threatened by floods

BELGRADE - So far 25,070 people have been evacuated from areas threatened by floods in Serbia, including 7,800 people from Obrenovac, a town near Belgrade that was completely flooded and where the situation is the worst, the Ministry of Interior stated on Monday.

Besides Obrenovac, which was first flooded by the Kolubara and later threatened by the Sava, the situation is particularly bad in Krupanj, a place in western Serbia that suffered torrential floods last week that triggered large landslides, and in some locations along the Sava, like Sremska Raca and Jamen, the ministry said.

Around 7,800 people have been evacuated from Obrenovac, while more than 9,000 have been through reception centres, including those who have found accommodation with relatives.

The evacuation and food and water supply to those still in the town continues.

A total of 660 people have been evacuated from Sremska Mitrovica, a town on the banks of the Sava, while the villagers of Jamen have all been evacuated.

The Sava is dropping slowly, with the level going down by 5 cm compared to Sunday night. The flood defences are stable for now.

The large number of landslides pose the biggest problem in Krupanj. The landslide that was endangering the cold storage facility with amonium has been dealt with. The water is receding. The population is getting regular deliveries of food and water.

The surface coal mines and power stations Kostolac and Kostolac B Drmno have been protected from the river Mlava and production continues unobstructed.

The sandbag levee at Kostolac B Drmno was strengthened during Sunday night and the situation at the Drmno surface mine is stable.
