Georgieva visits flooded regions, delivers aid

BELGRADE - European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva was in Serbia on Tuesday and Wednesday, where she visited flooded areas, delivered relief aid from the EU and expressed admiration for the emergency efforts shown by the government and the Serbian people.

The European commissioner first visited the completely flooded town of Obrenovac near Belgrade this morning, and then went on to visit the center of the Emergency Situations Sector, where she delivered generators and equipment donated by EULEX to help in relief efforts, and ended her visit at the Kostolac thermal power plant.

Georgieva saw the consequences of flooding in Obrenovac that continue to pose great problems to the Belgrade’s municipality.

We would like to express our sympathy for Serbia, with our brothers and sisters hit by the force of nature so strong as never before recorded here, Georgieva said at a meeting after visiting the power plant in Kostolac.

Georgieva expressed sympathy for the Serbian people affected by the floods, adding that the EU will continue aiding and supporting the people hit by the disaster.

EU civil protection now has two priorities – to continue pumping water out from flooded areas and to continue humanitarian aid to the people badly hit the flooding, she said.

Georgieva noted that late on Tuesday, she and Serbia’s Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic discussed EU Solidarity Fund support for the reconstruction in Serbia after damages caused by the floods are assessed.

Following her visit to Serbia, the European commissioner traveled today to neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina, also hit by devastating floods.
