Gabriel Oprea: 78 sanctions for violating laws and 55 offences in campaign for Europarliamentary election

A number of 78 sanctions for violating the law and 55 offences were committed during the campaign for the Europarliamentary election and in seven counties there was no incident, said Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea, Minister of the Interior on Thursday.

'In the four-week election campaign there were 909 election public events all over Romania. Referring to the electoral incidents, in seven counties there was no incident. In the remaining 34 counties, plus Bucharest, there were 179 incidents, which is five per county on average,' the Minister of the Interior told a videoconference with the prefects at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior (MAI).

He made it clear that fines amounting to 43,500 lei were paid.

Oprea said that for the day of the election MAI would take the public order measures with more than 50,000 policemen, gendarmes, border policemen and firefighters.

'Starting at 6 pm, on the Saturday, 30,000 MAI employees will ensure the guard of the 18,532 polling stations,' said Gabriel Oprea.

He added that all these organizational measures were included in the MAI general plan of measures, approved at the beginning of the election campaign.

'In this organizational context too I want to warn against the fact that on May 25 the Romanian Police would pay maximum attention to any notification of violating the law in connection with the electoral process. MAI guarantees the impartiality and the safety of the vote,' said the Minister of the Interior. AGERPRES
