The honorary President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Ion Iliescu, said that it is very important for Romanians to show up and vote on Sunday, so that the country can consolidate its status in the European Parliament as a full member of the European Union.

The former head of state, who voted at the polling station installed at the Jean Monnet High school in Bucharest, specified that he chose "a representative group, strong, made of people who are already experienced as MEPs and who played a very active role in the European Parliament."

"Not only in Romania, but in all the member states, including in the older members, the turnout is limited, and this is not good. That's why we need to affirm precisely this quality as a EU member state. I have voted with the satisfaction that we have a new status now — that of a full EU member state," Ion Iliescu said.

He also wanted to voice his satisfaction, in this context, with the evolution of the country in all these years.

"And now we must prove that we are indeed capable, through all our actions as a country, to be a dynamic member of the European community and to consolidate the rule-of-law state. On the other side, I would like that through our contribution we will be able to consolidate our place and the role of the socialist group and of the socialist democratic group inside the EP, the role of the European left, which meets the aspirations and interests of a larger category of people — jobs for all, equal status in the European community, the consolidation of our economic and social position and also of our political role within the European community," said the former head of state.
