President Traian Basescu stated that he voted for a new political party he hoped to continue with the process of reform of the state and advised those who didn't have a political option to show up at the polling stations anyway, even if it would be just to cancel their ballot, since a good turnout will still prove that Romanians are interested in the EU.

"I have voted for a new political party, a party that, I hope, will succeed to continue with the process of reform of the state, so that Romania will become a state with a credible justice system, a state with functional institutions, to be at the disposal of the citizens and not at the disposal of the political parties," said Basescu, on Sunday, after he cast his vote.

He also added that the members of this party he voted for are full of enthusiasm and that he wanted this enthusiasm "to contaminate Romania."

"The most important thing is that today, at 10 am, we had a better turnout than in 2009. It is essential that, through their participation, regardless of whom they voted for, Romanians can prove their attachment to the European Union. If they don't have a political option, they must show up anyway and cancel their ballot, proving thus, through their presence, that Romanians have interest in the EU. In the past we had a weak turnout and every time when Romania's attachment to the European values came to be discussed, this weak participation was also mentioned," the head of state also said.
