Greeks vote in local and European Parliament elections

Greeks vote today in the European Parliament elections and the second round of local polls.

In the municipal elections, candidates will compete in runoff votes in some 200 towns and cities but most eyes will be on who takes control of some of Greece’s main cities: Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra and Volos. In the regional vote, Attica and Central Macedonia, as well 10 other governorships, are up for grabs.

Among the key contests will be whether Attica governor Yiannis Sgourous can hold of the challenge of SYRIZA’s Rena Dourou. Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis, who like Sgouros is backed by both coalition parties, will be up against another SYRIZA hopeful, Gavriil Sakellaridis,

In the European ballot, Greeks will be voting to elect 21 MEPs from 1299 candidates. However, opposition parties have asked voters to turn the election into a referendum on the government. In the last few days, most opinion polls have suggested that SYRIZA would come out on top with a winning margin of up to 4 percentage points.
