WWII hero Glezos, 91, to become MEP along with Zagorakis and 19 others
World War Two hero Manolis Glezos is set to be elected to European Parliament at the age of 91 following Sundays vote in Greece. He is set to be joined in Brussels and Strasbourg by the former captain of Greeces Euro 2004-winning soccer team, Theodoros Zagorakis.
Although the counting of ballots continued on Monday morning, Glezos was way ahead of other SYRIZA candidates and looked certain to gather the most votes nationwide among all the 21 Greek who will represent their country.
He was added to SYRIZA candidate list at the last minute and had to give up his seat in Greek Parliament as a result.
The leftist party is due to elected five other MEPs. They are likely to be: Sofia Sakorafa, Dimitris Papadimoulis, Constantina Kuneva, Giorgos Katrougalos and Constantinos Chrysogonos.
Former Merchant Marine Minister Manolis Kefaloyiannis leads the way for New Democracy. The other four hopefuls set to join him in Brussels are: Maria Spyraki, Eliza Vozemberg, Giorgos Kyrtsos and Zagorakis.
Golden Dawn will be sending three MEPs: Eleftherios Synadinos, Lambros Fontoulis and Giorgos Epitideios. Fontoulis is the father of one of the Golden Dawn members shot dead outside party offices in November last year.
The PASOK-led Elia alliance looks set to elect former MP Eva Kaili and party secretary Nikos Androulakis.
In its election debut, centrist To Potami won two places in the European Parliament, which will be taken up by Giorgos Grammatikakis and Miltiadis Kyrkos.
The Communist Party is also sending two MEPs: Constantinos Papadakis and Sotiris Zarianopoulos. Ex-MP Notis Maris will be Independent Greeks only representative in the European Parliament.
