Barroso: We will help Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina

BRUSSELS - The EU will help Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina overcome the consequences of recent floods, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said after an informal summit of European leaders in Brussels.

The Commission is working intensively in coordination with member states towards helping the Balkan countries, Barroso told reporters late Tuesday after a working dinner for 28 EU heads of state and government.

Immediately after the first requests for assistance came from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the EU sent experts, boats and helicopters to help the endangered population, he said.

In addition, we have a solidarity fund that Serbia can access as if it were an EU member state, Barroso said, adding that it is now up to the Serbian government to submit damage reports.
