Gendarmerie and special forces on May 30 launched an operation against members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and its supporters, who have blocked roads since last week in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.

Some 100 armored vehicles were dispatched to Fisovası, located in the Lice district on the main road between the provinces of Diyarbakır and Bingöl, as a part of an operation against a pro-PKK group who have dug ditches to block the road in protest at military operations and ongoing post constructions in the region. PKK activities in the area have been continuing for seven days.

Earth movers were also sent to the area to close the ditches.

Clashes erupted when the group threw fireworks and hand-made explosives at security forces, who responded with tear gas. The group also set three vehicles alight.

Gunshots were heard at the scene, though the press has not been allowed into the area.
The road is still closed to traffic due to the operation.
