State attorneys to protect state's property interests

BELGRADE - The new law on the State Attorney's Office, which came into force on Saturday, needs to ensure full protection of the property interests of the Republic of Serbia, which have been neglected for years.

"In addition to a series of reforms under way, a clear resolve and intent of our state to protect the property of the Republic of Serbia in a definitive and suitable manner is evident," State Attorney Snjezana Prodanovic said in an interview with Tanjug.

The state has identified the drastic consequences of having neglected its property for over 20 years, not only in terms of legal regulations, she said, adding that the consequences are still being felt.

"The new law is consistent, more complete and of better quality compared to the one that was in force until now. It will ensure full protection of the property interests of the Republic of Serbia in an adequate manner in proceedings in courts, arbitrations and in other state authorities", she said.

Under the new regulations, the State Attorney's Office will take over from the Ministry of Justice the affairs of representing the state in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

Most notably, the institution will no longer be called the Public Attorney's Office, but the State Attorney's Office.

It will be headed by the state attorney and a team of deputy state attorneys.
