The celebration of 150 years since the establishment of Romania's Court of Auditors was hosted on Friday by the plenum hall of the Chamber of Deputies at the Parliament Palace. President Traian Basescu, Prime Minister Victor Ponta, Chamber of Deputies Chairman Valeriu Zgonea, Court of Auditors President Nicolae Vacaroiu, National Bank of Romania Governor Mugur Isarescu, Romanian Orthodox Church Patriarch Daniel, Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu, and several ministers, senators and deputies attended the event.

* The Court of Auditors plays an essential role in eliminating the underground economy and in using public funds "with maximum efficiency and full transparency," President Traian Basescu said on Friday at the ceremony marking 150 years since the establishment of the institution. The President added that for achieving significant progress towards the improvement in the financial management in Romania a "firm commitment" is needed on the part of all bodies involved in the management and auditing of public funds and of European ones. Basescu said that, although the recommendations are made by the Court of Auditors, the responsibility for implementing an efficient management of public funds rests with institutions. According to him, in Romania, the Court of Auditors is politically independent, with Parliament being the only institution that can evaluate its work.
