Supreme Court: MP Draghici sent to court

MP Sonia Maria Draghici has been referred to the court by prosecutors with the Supreme Court of Justice and Cassation for conflict of interest.

'The defendant, in her capacity as parliamentarian in Romania's Parliament, recommended her son for hiring as expert at her MP office and approved an individual employment contract for her son for a definite time, from September 2009 to the end of her term in office. Under the contract, ill-gotten gains of RON 48,575 were directly derived, paid for by the Chamber of Deputies,' the Supreme Court reports in a press release issued on Tuesday.

The case was forwarded to the Supreme Court for consideration.

The Supreme Court mentions that this stage in the criminal trial should see the finalisation of the criminal investigation and the submission of counts to the court for consideration proper, which in no way violates the presumption of innocence.

In March 2013, the prosecutors started a criminal probe of MP Sonia Maria Draghici over her hiring of her son.

The case was opened following a complaint filed by the National Integrity Agency (ANI) in 2011. AGERPRES
