First group of suspects in attack on gold mine facilities released

Six of 22 people being charged with a string of criminal offenses in connection with an arson attack on the headquarters of a mining company in northern Greece were granted release by the magistrate investigating the case on Monday.

The 22 residents of Halkidiki were arrested following an attack in February 2013 on the facilities of Hellenic Gold, which operates a gold mine in the area of Skouries that has faced strong oppositions by locals.

The suspects denied the charges leveled against them in a joint written deposition.

The other 16 will face the magistrate on Tuesday.
