Serres farmers call for 'state of emergency' following hailstorms

Farmers in Serres, northeastern Greece, have called upon authorities to declare a state of emergency in the entire region after hailstorms caused extensive damage to local agricultural production over the last few days.

A unit from the Greek Agricultural Insurance Organization (ELGA) visited the area on Monday in an effort to assess the damage and accelerate the process of compensation to those eligible.

Corn, tobacco, cotton and watermelon crops were the worst affected, while the hardest-hit areas were reportedly Peponia and Gazoro.
